I am beginning to list the contents of an estate that dates back well into the 1870s and reflects all the beautiful needlework of that era.  All will be listed with a GP in title, so will be easily searchable.

Estate reflects several sets of grandmothers and great grandmothers and we will furnish the names after purchase so that credit can be given for the makers and owners of these beautiful Victorian items.  I want to get the items on fairly quickly, (many monogramed linens here) so will identify owners later.

Estate is fantastic.  Many items I have never seen before, much less offered for sale in my linen store.  More items than we can count right now.

Estate includes handmade lace handkerchiefs, collars (many), doilies, edging, runners, trims from dresses/blouses, and shams (many).  Embroidered bags, doilies, tableclothes and napkins, many early damask.  Victorian calf leather gloves, storage bags, handbags and more.  Many items handmade, many items from France, Ireland, Germany, and more.

Background:  this family immigrated from Germany to US in the late 1930s just prior to World War II and brought their complete household with them.  Both were physicians.  Both brought family items that date back to 1870s and in beautiful condition despite the age.  Only a very few items can be classified as "cutters", meaning  items that can be used for crafts, framing, or whatever you please.  I know many of you ladies love the old laces so I plan to list even the less than perfect items just for you.

Most of these items are handmade, and I sure brushed up on my lace education so that I can give you correct information. To let you know the quality here, some of the clothing items are going to a speciality auction next year!

I will add information as I get it on all items, and again will furnish the names of the original owners as well.

*******

Change of pace now, two printed tablecloths by Lenco which will be listed separately.  This is SECOND, #2,  34x34", printed on linen of medium weight with machine sewn hems.  Delightful childhood toy fantasy on both with same characters in slightly different setup.  On #1 the characters are scattered all over the cloth, but all facing same direction.  This cloth, #2 has characters in border print with enlarged characters in each corner.

Both are stamped Lenco.  I found little information on this company, maybe German, maybe Italian, maybe French.  Definitely the subjects have a european look, and to me they look 1920s 1930s, with the elf like hats, and slightly kewie doll look to them.  This is a guess on my part.  The company is no longer in business and no tablecloths are listed for the company on any site carrying vintage linens!!!!  What does that tell you!!  Maybe a visitor can fill us in.

Lots of detail:  characters are from 2 to approximately 6" high, marching around the border of the cloth.  Little girl with beret holding her dolly, solder, cat dressed in tuxedo playing a fiddle, giraffe pull toy, hot air balloon, girl with squeezebox, boy in pointed hat with drum, mechanical cats, girl holding a goose (makes her look like she has wings), elephant toy, coach decorated like a circus wagon with driver in turban, teddy with coat, clown in pointed hat, kite with a man's face, and much more.  In center there are tiny characters, a doll, a ball.  The girl with the squeezebox is largest and she is in each corner surrounded by toys.

M
easurements:  square shape, 34x34"

Colors: soft white color, characters printed in muted reds, blues, yellows, and greens.

Fiber: medium weight linen with very fine weave.  So fine it is hard to see any nubs and slubs under magnification. The cloth is super cold, so it is linen, and a very nice tightly woven linen it is. The weave on this cloth is slightly different from the #1 tablecloth, it was a very very tiny pebble texture, which is more of a random weave. Still tight and excellent quality.

Age:  I am no expert, I am guessing somewhere between 1920s 1930s based on the way the characters look.  Have a kewpie doll look to them with pointed hats.  This checks out with story of family leaving Germany prior to WWII, taking all their household items. Cloth is definitely European, not sold in US?

Condition: very good for its age (80+ years ). very slight smudging that will soak out beautifully and safely in solution of powdered Biz and warm water (never use Oxyclean, it is just a bleach and can harm vintage fibers).  No damage, looks lightly used and not abused in any way.  No rips, tears or holes.

Beautiful smaller tablecloth which is so versatile.  Can be used for center of a large table or small. On a buffet or sideboard.  Fantastic for a kid's room, and to have two with similiar themes, heaven!   More to come in this beautiful group!
