I am beginning to list the contents of an estate that dates back well into the 1870s and reflects all the beautiful needlework of that era. All will be listed with a GP in title, so will be easily searchable.
Estate reflects several sets of grandmothers and great grandmothers and we will furnish the names after purchase so that credit can be given for the makers and owners of these beautiful Victorian items. I want to get the items on fairly quickly, (many monogramed linens here) so will identify owners later.
Estate is fantastic. Many items I have never seen before, much less offered for sale in my linen store. More items than we can count right now.
Estate includes handmade lace handkerchiefs, collars (many), doilies, edging, runners, trims from dresses/blouses, and shams (many). Embroidered bags, doilies, tableclothes and napkins, many early damask. Victorian calf leather gloves, storage bags, handbags and more. Many items handmade, many items from France, Ireland, Germany, and more.
Background: this family immigrated from Germany to US in the late 1930s just prior to World War II and brought their complete household with them. Both were physicians. Both brought family items that date back to 1870s and in beautiful condition despite the age. Only a very few items can be classified as "cutters", meaning items that can be used for crafts, framing, or whatever you please. I know many of you ladies love the old laces so I plan to list even the less than perfect items just for you.
Most of these items are handmade, and I sure brushed up on my lace education so that I can give you correct information. To let you know the quality here, some of the clothing items are going to a speciality auction next year!
I will add information as I get it on all items, and again will furnish the names of the original owners as well.
*******
This is a beautiful medium size doily, 10x14" in a oval shape. Would be beautiful framed which is where this belongs as this lace is quite rare.
Handmade with only needle and thread by means of looping the threads somewhat like tatting, this is a beautiful lace often called Bebilla, Nazareth, knotted lace, or Armenian lace. This lace was popular in the Victorian Edwardian era. Lacemakers in Europe were busy turning this gorgeous lace out for trim on dresses and baby clothes, but also doilies, and runners.
No longer made, every piece is rare, and as photos will show, it is gorgeous and highly collectable.
I am not a lace expert, so let your eyes be your guide on these laces that I will be running. I have done research, but it is an extensive field and I do not present myself as a lace expert. As always, if there is ANY problem with any item that you buy and receive from me, it is returnable, no questions asked, my regular policy. As always, if you know anything more about this item or any of my items, I greatly appreciate hearing from you via the ask the seller a question. I will add your information to the listing1
Measurements: 10 x 14"
Colors: very light cream color.
Fiber: very fine weight cotton crochet thread. Thread on this collar is whisper thin, extremely fine. Fabric looks like a woven linen,
Pattern: Sheer scalloped linen center surrounded with six larger 3" flower circles. Each circle is joined to doily and next circle by tiny little flower circles. Complex pattern also forms tiny lace flowers into wreaths between the larger circles. These are very characteristic of Nazareth/Armenian lace (several other pieces in this collection).
Age: I am no expert, I am guessing somewhere between 1870s and 1900 based on the very complex and beautiful work.
Condition: very good for its age (130 years +). Despite being stored for a long long time, there is just a hint of smudging that will easily come out with a gentle soak in mild soap. Will need to be blocked on a towel or board with a few pins to make sure that the points are all perfect. Seems starched a bit, but is a good quality cotton so should block out beautifully without starch (which is not terrific to add to things anyway, critters like it).
Beautiful lace, and if you think this is beautiful, wait until you see what is coming up. To see this collection from one estate, search GP, and all will come up!
