I am beginning to list the contents of an estate that dates back well into the 1870s and reflects all the beautiful needlework of that era. All will be listed with a GP in title, so will be easily searchable.
Estate reflects several sets of grandmothers and great grandmothers and we will furnish the names after purchase so that credit can be given for the makers and owners of these beautiful Victorian items. I want to get the items on fairly quickly, (many monogramed linens here) so will identify owners later.
Estate is fantastic. Many items I have never seen before, much less offered for sale in my linen store. More items than we can count right now.
Estate includes handmade lace handkerchiefs, collars (many), doilies, edging, runners, trims from dresses/blouses, and shams (many). Embroidered bags, doilies, tableclothes and napkins, many early damask. Victorian calf leather gloves, storage bags, handbags and more. Many items handmade, many items from France, Ireland, Germany, and more.
Background: this family immigrated from Germany to US in the late 1930s just prior to World War II and brought their complete household with them. Both were physicians. Both brought family items that date back to 1870s and in beautiful condition despite the age. Only a very few items can be classified as "cutters", meaning items that can be used for crafts, framing, or whatever you please. I know many of you ladies love the old laces so I plan to list even the less than perfect items just for you.
Most of these items are handmade, and I sure brushed up on my lace education so that I can give you correct information. To let you know the quality here, some of the clothing items are going to a speciality auction next year!
I will add information as I get it on all items, and again will furnish the names of the original owners as well.
*******
Kid leather gloves (baby goat skin) were a staple in every Victorian Edwardian woman's wardrobe. The style was to wear skin tight wrist length gloves during the day to protect hands from sun, and longer length gloves for evening wear. Often with sleeveless dresses, the gloves were above the elbow.
A good glove is judged by the delicate kid leather, handsewn seams, and the gussets at base of fingers and thumbs. These made the gloves last longer as the leather was less likely to tear. Also the best had additional leather on inside of each finger seam, also to extend life of the glove (unlike 1940s 1950s gloves that were knit and machine made, and worn looser).
This pair of UNUSED gloves still has the little thread stitch holding them together that is put on at the factory. They are made in France and of excellent quality.
Marked: Au Louvre chevreau marque le gant solem'
Measurements: length is 11" (with a 4 1/4" cuff - measurement from base of thumb to edge of cuff, it is still a daytime glove) with a palm measurement of 4 3/4". The gloves seem to be stamped 6 1/4", but these gloves are made to be worn super super tight.
Design: creamy colored kid leather gloves with a slit to base of thumb which is reinforced with a 1/16" piece of rolled and hand stitched kid leather. Four pearl buttons and four beautifully made and reinforced buttonholes. A carefully handsewn gusset at base of thumb, mark of quality French gloves. Fingers have strips of kid leather along edges, again, handsewn. Back of gloves have three decorative lines of stitching.
Colors: very light cream color, which was standard for daywear.
Fiber: baby goat leather, known as Kid, the only leather a fashionable Victorian Edwardian lady wore.
Age: I am no expert, I am guessing somewhere between 1880s and 1900 based the appearance of the gloves.
Size: how small are these gloves???? I have an extremely small woman's hand, my pinkie ring is a size 2, and there is no way my hand even can get past the cuff. Looking at the top of the glove, picture #5, gloves measure 2 1/4" (measurement taken by the decorative lines). But unused!! These are excellent gloves for display.
Condition: very good for its age. No stains or smudging after all these years! Looks good enough to just put in place. These were never used as they are still fastened together with a few threads at the cuff. Leather is still soft, fresh, with just the smallest bit of yellowing due to age. How much? Hard to say as these are a light cream color (so are yellowish anyway).
More to come from this estate. Search for GP to see the collection.
