Found this little beauty at an estate sale and can tell you the date pretty accurately, late 1940s.  My mom got an unpainted one just like it as a wedding shower gift in 1946.  Hers saw lots of action thru the years and still works fine today.

Hard to know when someone painted this little beauty and made it even prettier.  Four large sunflowers and leaves in shades of yellow, gold (light to dar), darker brown and various shakes of jade green.  Nicely done, there is shading on all the leaves, each is painted with about four different blended colors.  Flowers are beautifully shaped and very bright and pretty.

Not sure if this has a finished to protect the painting or not.  Seems matte, so I would guess it is only for decoration, but don't see why you can't put a light clear coat on it if you want to actually use it.

Handles are turned wood with three little ridges on each handle.  Mechanism appears to be wooden too, there is a tapered wooden cap on one end and a funny, slightly rusty nut on the other.  Nut has a tapered end. The rod visable could be wood or metal, I am thinking it is wood as the cap on other end is wood too.  Maybe rod has screw threads on it?  This part I am not so sure about, but mechanism looks fine, nice smooth action on this rolling pin.

Wood appears to be maple.  When was it painted?  Not sure, looks like the decoration has been on quite a while and is still in good shape.

Measurements: 18" tip to tip, diameter 7 1/4", or approximately 2 1/2" wide so its a nice thick rolling pin.  Heavy too.

Pattern/Design: maple rolling pin is deorated with primative style painted sunflowers in shades of yellow and jade green that match the jade green painted handles.

Condition: very good for its age, must be at least 65+years old and still works fine.    Very sturdy.  No damage, cracks, chips or dings.  Handles are in good order, little wear on paint, no chipping or cracking.  Smooth rolling.  Only sign of its age is rust on the tapered metal nut keeping the rolling pin together. Handle on that side is a tad looser, but that is easily fixed by putting a bit of white string around the handle next to the roller.  Snugs it right up again. Painting is in perfect shape too.

Very very sweet little rolling pin to use and display in your retro kitchen.  Sure it has been used but still works great.

Interesting fact, did you ever wonder why you see all kinds of 1930s 1940s 1950s short baby socks but seldom any long ones?   Long ones were actually the norm but few survive.  Know why?  Housewives cut the foot off the old socks and used them to cover the rolling pins. They were fine cotton and the exact length of the rolling pins!
