Went to an estate auction a few weeks ago and found this gorgeous beauty (along w/ napkins - LISTED SEPARATELY). Obviously it was too good to use so the first owner packed it away with its original paper wrapper.
Irish linen is considered the world's best linen, the designs, all worked out stitch by stitch to be later woven on looms, are closely guarded company treasures. This pattern is a very pretty and unusual one, is lilac flowers, and lilac leaves covering border and center.
Not all linen is Irish linen. Unless it is tagged it is often difficult to determine where it was made. And many countries do a beautiful job of weaving linen, Japan, for example (where you find some gorgeous post-war linens made with silk mixes).
This tablecloth has its original tags, parts written out in fountain pen ink! There is at leat one tiny paper tag reading "Made in Ireland", another "No. 98HRH, Size 70x106" Pattn: 5 Qty 1 cloth Made in Ireland Rolled hem". This tag is about 2x2" and printed on white paper with gold framed info. The last tag is approximately 3/4" x 2 1/2" "pure double damask warranted all pure linen Made in Ireland".
Design: Wide border of lilac bouquets with oval lilac leaves tastefully added here and ther. This winds all around the outside of the cloth, about 10" wide with additional swirls in corners. Center is a huge oval with scrolls/swirls and lilac flowers/leaves tucked into the center. Very nice salvages on this, always a weak spot on some other linens, this salvage is at least 1/2" wide and tightly woven (this is where the shuttle changes direction on the loom and returns, leaving a loop of thread.
Measurements: tag said 70x106" I did not remeasure it as it is nicely folded and it would be like folding up a roadmap to get it nice and pretty again. It would be sensible to think that the first time it is washed it will have a bit of shrinkage and a color change (might be whiter).
Age: Just a guess as we do not have the sales receipt. Based on the tags, nicely printed with gold scrolls and info added in fountain pen ink, and the original dark matte green heavy paper with more tags on it (it is ripped up but I will include it for fun), I am thinking this looks 1900 to 1920s or 1930s? Just a guess, I am no expert.
Color: Now a cream color, but this has never been washed. Might stay cream or become off white.
Condition: very very very good for its age, more than 70+ years old. Clean, no damage or smudging, looks like it just came out of the store. Of course it will need to be cleaned before it is used, I will leave that up to you because of the gorgeous tags this one has.
Not often we see such a beautiful or extensively decorated linen cloth, in perfect shape. The way it is going, it will be around for another 70 years. These are getting harder and harder to find. You can buy a new Irish linen tablecloth but the price will knock your socks off!!!
