Went to a wonderful textile auction last week in an artist's loft.  After dress after dress went thru the auction process, plus the shoes, beaded bags etc, I lucked out.  All the linens came on last so I got more than twelve cases of them.  Am still sorting them out so will be listing them over the next few weeks.

Beautiful set of twelve  linen napkins, light cream colored, just lightly used, and with a beautiful pattern of ribbons, bows and roses.  Best part are the beautiful 2" initials.  Appear to be RT and embroidered in padded satin stitches in Victorian lettering.

These are excellent quality damask linen napkins, with  beautifully elaborate design.  Hard to believe this, but these patterns on damask are planned stitch by stitch for the looms that weave them.  This design has veins on the rose leaves, half opened buds, and fully open roses.  Ribbons twist and turn all around the borders and are "tied" with a bow on each midpoint.

Design: large square linen damask napkin with a double row of winding ribbons around the outside edge.  At the midpoint is a 4x5" bow with long tails that are twisting and turning too.  A bouquet of roses and buds comes out of the top of each bow, with heads of the roses pointing toward the middle of the napkins. Each corner has a bouquet of roses and rosebuds, heads down with a smaller 2x2" bow on the stems.   Plainer than some of the classically designed damask napkins  with pillars, Greek musical instruments, etc, but this design is beautifully designed and  woven.  Despite large areas of "empty" space in the design, it comes off beautifully with the twisting ribbons and bouquets of flowers.  Initials are embroidered in one corner of each napkin, approximately 2" each, using RT.  Beautifully padded satin stitched.

Measurements: 22x22"

Colors: light cream  color which may become whiter when cleaned.  Lots of storage smuding on these.  One napkins appears to have been used and washed a few times and it appears to be a softer lighter cream that is very  close to white.

Age: I am guessing it is turn of the last century, maybe thru the 1920s?

fiber: I am guessing this is linen, slightly cool to the touch, and with slubs under magnification.

Condition: very good for its age considering it is over 80 years old.  I do not see any rips, tears or damage.  But these have been stored a long long time and there is storage smudging and a few rust type marks too.  These are along some of the corners.  But a long soak in an enzyme cleaner like Biz or Oxyclean will get these sparkling clean and the beautiful again.

Very pretty gift for a special person and a beautiful older set of linens beautifully embroidered.
