Auction Description

Title: Encaustic Painting: VALLEY POND.
Description: ENCAUSTIC painting (from the Greek "burnt in") was the ancient method, recorded by Pliny, of fixing pigments with heated wax. It was practiced in Egypt about 3000BC and reached its peak in Classical Greece. Pigments, mixed with melted beeswax, were brushed onto stone or plaster, smoothed with a metal spatula, and then blended and driven into the wall with a heated iron. The surface was later polished with a soft cloth. Leonardo da Vinci and others tried to revive the technique without success. Vincent van Gogh also used this method to give 'body' to his oil pigment and the Neo-impressionist Louis Hayet applied encaustic to paper. Others who have used encaustic are Picasso, Klee, Gorky and David Hockney.
Today we use modern low-heat tools and coloured natural waxes to achieve these beautiful paintings, of which no two will ever be the same. The finished paintings have a 3-D effect, which cannot be appreciated by scanning or photographing, and the colours seen in our images are less vibrant than the original painting.
The wax is very stable, but soft, so I seal my paintings with a wax sealer, which has been specially formulated to protect the surface. I do still surgest that any encaustic paintings are not placed in direct sun light as it may cause the wax to soften.
All my paintings are supplied ready to frame, and any good frame maker should be able to advise you on the type best suited to the style of painting. I do sugest that they are not placed behind glass as this can cause the wax to soften and it also reduces the vibrant sheen of the painting.
Being painted on a special card these paintings will last indefinitely, with just a light polish with a soft cloth to remove dust particles and to restore the sheen.
