I am beginning to list the contents of an estate that dates back well into the 1870s and reflects all the beautiful needlework of that era.  All will be listed with a GP in title, so will be easily searchable.

Estate reflects several sets of grandmothers and great grandmothers and we will furnish the names after purchase so that credit can be given for the makers and owners of these beautiful Victorian items.  I want to get the items on fairly quickly, (many monogramed linens here) so will identify owners later.

Estate is fantastic.  Many items I have never seen before, much less offered for sale in my linen store.  More items than we can count right now.

Estate includes handmade lace handkerchiefs, collars (many), doilies, edging, runners, trims from dresses/blouses, and shams (many).  Embroidered bags, doilies, tableclothes and napkins, many early damask.  Victorian calf leather gloves, storage bags, handbags and more.  Many items handmade, many items from France, Ireland, Germany, and more.

Background:  this family immigrated from Germany to US in the late 1930s just prior to World War II and brought their complete household with them.  Both were physicians.  Both brought family items that date back to 1870s and in beautiful condition despite the age.  Only a very few items can be classified as "cutters", meaning  items that can be used for crafts, framing, or whatever you please.  I know many of you ladies love the old laces so I plan to list even the less than perfect items just for you.

Most of these items are handmade, and I sure brushed up on my lace education so that I can give you correct information. To let you know the quality here, some of the clothing items are going to a speciality auction next year!

I will add information as I get it on all items, and again will furnish the names of the original owners as well.

*******
I am a knitter and am always on the lookout for knitted doilies because they are not common at all.  Slightly different from crochet, crochet uses a thread loop and hook.  Knitting is two sticks and a thread that forms multiple loops.

Knitting is interesting because there are only three basic stitches that create  doilies like this.  Knit, purl, and yarn over stitches.  Add knitting two stitches together (decreasing) and you are a knitter!

Knitted lace is beautiful and made in one piece, which is different from some crochet which is made in pieces and joined (like a tablecloth).

These doilies are worked from center out on 3 to 4 double pointed needles.  Very fine thread and needles made these.  Patterns are complex which marks them as Victorian/Edwardian, as the 1950s doilies were crochet and not as fine as these.

Measurements: round shape, one doily is 9", the other is 13"

Colors:  light cream color.

Fiber: fine weight cotton thread

Pattern: 9" doily has a flower or star center within a circle of tiny oval motifs in netting like background.  Band of slightly twisted eyelets (these are yarn overs), and to finish, an inch wide edging band of V shaped designs.  Makes outside edge slightly scalloped in outline.  The 13" doily has a large twisted swirl in center that has diamond motifs tucked in each finished band.  Diamonds have a V shaped stocking stitch motif that nestles into base of each one.  Finish on the edge is gorgeous.  See photo, but keep it mind this doily needs  a gentle blocking to bring out this area.  Final motif is elongated diamond shape with knitted leaves in center and along outside edge.  Tiny tiny twisted picots on edge that are actually CROCHET.  This will be beautiful when blocked on board with lots of pins.  The complex patterns are excellent.

Age:  I am no expert, I am guessing somewhere between 1870s and 1900 based on the very complex and beautiful work.

Condition: very good for its age (130 years +).  A little bit of  smudging after all these years!  But easily removed with a gentle soak in my favorite enzyme soak, Biz powder (by at super market, Target or Walmart). Rinse well.  Block on a towel or board with pins in order to make the details pop and the edging to stand out beautifully.

Beautiful older doilies.  More to come from this estate.  Search for GP to see the collection.
