Six Pairs of Vintage Woolworth Brand Plastic Knitting Needles: #4 & 5 (14" long)
Three pairs of #US 4 and three pairs of #US 5 needles, gray plastic with nice smooth points and flexible too
Not sure of age, marked 99 cents with Woolworth's tag
I confess I collect knitting needles and am continually on the lookout for old ones. My favorites are the small plastic double points in smaller sizes, ivory colored that are so great for baby hats and socks. I found these nice longer knitting needles at an estate sale and snapped them right up. Not sure who made them for Woolworth's but they are nicely made, smooth with great points. These are gray plastic.
Which type of needle is best? It is preference. I have all kinds of needles but find I keep going back to the same needles again and again. Usually the plastic Balene ones that are new, or the 1930s 1940s plastic double points in smaller sizes that I use for baby hats. I seldom use metal needles except for the very very fine needles that I use to knit beaded bracelets, or the sort of fine ones I use to knit beaded scarves. If the points are easy to use I will use them.
Aluminum/metal needles are cool to the touch, have no flexibility and have that familiar click click click sounds. They are slick so yarn slides easier. Plastic needles are much more flexible, are warmer to the touch and the yarn tends to stick a bit rather than slide. Helpful with some yarns. My favorite new plastic needle is the Balene as the points are curvy and super easy to knit with. Some people swear by bamboo needles, because they are flexible, lightweight and also the yarn sticks a bit so you don't drop stitches as easily. I have broken lots of these, especially the smaller sizes, and find the tips are rought and snag yarn, but it varies by brand. Wooden needes are gorgeous, especially the higher end ones made of birch, maple, ebony wood etc. These tend to be very expensive. Sometimes the tips are not pointed enough for me.
These #4 and #5 are very flexible plastic and although older (maybe 1960s 1970s) they are in great unused shade and still flexible and ready to use. Three pairs of US #4 and three pairs of US #5, and these are the long ones, 14" long.
These are perfect for lighter finer work like baby blankets, fine scarves, projects you need a fine needle for and the extra length for a wider project that does not quite need cables.
Condition: very good. All are in unused or like new condition. Packages are in great shape too.
Great batch of longer plastic needles in finer sizes.
