I found these little beauties at an estate auction. Like a rainbow of color that you can't find today, AND brands that have long since stopped manufacturer. Each ball is full, or nearly full so you are getting a beautiful array of crochet cotton in various weights for your crochet, tatting, or knitting pleasure. I have used this type of thinner thread to knit beaded jewelry and knit beaded purses and it works beautifully.
Like anything else, crochet threads have changed thru the years. Most of that change is that colors are added or subtracted due to public request. In the 1950s these hotter colors were popular along with colors we never see today, the aqua, greens other than mint or Christmas, and many colors of cream and ecru.
If you collect old needlework books, you will note that most of these manufacturers made dozens of different kinds of threads for all uses. My favorite reference book "The Complete Encyclopedia of needlwwork by Therese de Dillmont (printed in 1880s, now in reprint). For any project Ms de Dillmont suggested dozens of DMC threads in different twists, weights, colors, fibers. Even thru the 1920s when knitted beaded bags were in vogue, there were silk and cotton thread twists in various weights to string the beads on. Our choices are kind of limited today.
So these various colored threads are a nice little glimpse into the 1940s and 1950s. Lots of colors and brands, most of the balls are full or almost full, so are a great value too!
Nineteen crochet cotton threads include:
1. DMC white thread, "cordonnet special" name, #30, 216 yards - full ball
2. Clark's ONT thread, medium blue color, 60 yds w/ ball band, no size (probably #20) full ball
3. Clark's ONT thread, medium pink color, 60 yds, no size (probably #20) 1/2 ball
4. Clark's ONT thread, medium peach color, 60 yds w/ ball band, no size (probably #20) 1/2 ball
5. Royal brand, medium blue, 93 yds, #8 size, shiney, full ball
6. Sillateen sansil cotton - peach, no size, just a few yards left
7. J & P Coats pale blue, 60 yds #5 - 1/4 ball left
8. Royal brand, varigated gold, 93 yds, #8 size, shiney full ball
9. Royal brand, medium green, 93 yds, #8 size, shiney 3/4 ball
10. Royal brand, pale pink, 93 yds, #8 size, shiney full ball
11. Orchard brand, pale beige, #10, 200 yds full ball
12. Clark's, medium ecru (cream), #30, 625 yards, full ball
13. J & P Coat's, medium cream color, #10, 250 yards, full ball
14. J & P Coat's, medium cream color, #40, 400 yards, 1/4 ball (this one on a very unusual cardboard, like big tube with gold end)
15. Clark's big ball, varigated orange, #30, 500 yards, full ball
16. Clark's big ball, varigated orange, #30, 500 yards, 1/4 ball
17. Star brand, medium cream color, #30, 400 yards, 3/4 ball
18. Clark's big ball, white, #20, 300 yards, full ball
19. Star brand, varigated all colors, #30, 300 yds, 3/4 ball
Excellent mix. Impossible to find these colors today and the brands are long gone. If you collect old crochet books and magazines you will recognize the Star, Royal, Orchards brands from the advertisements.
Condition: very very good for being 70+ years old. This is clean, not dusty, and has no funny smells. Beautiful and hard to find colors and brands.
Great way to build your stash of gorgeous crochet threads.
