A parasite is a living organism living in or on another organism, at the expense of the host.  Taking the broad definition, this includes bacteria, viruses and yeasts, as well as the worms, protozoa and arthropods most people think of.

Parasites can cause fevers, chronic infections, autoimmune disease or immune dysfunction; lack of energy, chronic fatigue or listlessness; poor appetite, loss of weight, anorexia, craving for unusual foods or other eating disorders, hyperactivity, nervousness, restlessness, irritability or depression,; insomnia, nightmares or sleepwalking;  itching or toxic feeling; allergic reactions and many other conditions and symptoms.  (Note - Many of these can have other causes as well.)
