Auction Description

Vintage 1930 Movie Sheet Music: Falling in Love Again (can't help it) from The Blue Angel
starring Marlene Dietrich,  and Emil Jannings directed by Josef von Sternberg
Marlene's introduction to American Audiences

NOTE: second items ship FREE!  See banner for latest sale!

I went to a wonderful estate auction a few weeks ago and found a big deep box of old sheet music.  Some real gems in this lot.  Mostly 1920s and 1930s which was a wonderful era for sheet music.  Photos or artwork are wonderful, these are perfect for framing and giving as gifts. I have a small half bath that has the wall covered with Eddie Canter, Al Jolson, and the various vaudville follies.

UFA Paramount released the movie "The Blue Angel" in 1930 with its new star Marlene Dietrich.  Also starrred Emil Jannings. This sheet music Famous Music Co has a 1930 copyright.  Music and  Lyics by Frederich Hollander.

This film was Marlene Dietrich's screen introduction for Paramount.  Talk of course was that the German beauty was not all that beautiful as she was considered a "big girl" with rather unusual features, not the typical actress that US audiences was used to seeing.  She was the bold, bad girl, posing in a tight beaded outfit, sleeveless, deep cut neckline, and knee high leather boots.  Most of her legs are showing and she is sitting in the typical bad girl pose, backwards on a chair.  Wow, can you imagine what 1930 audiences thought of her.

And the heavy accent or even a poor speaking voice was professional suicide for many actors at this time. Talkies were coming in and some actors just did not sound as romantic as their "real reel" voices when audiences finally heard them!  Because of her heavy accent, Paramount was a bit worried about its new star.

Chorus: Falling in love again, never wanted to; what am I to do? Can't help it"

Cover is muted deep blue, cream and black with large picture of  Emil Jennings, and smaller side picture of beautiful Marlene Dietrich.

Music is double fold (front and back cover) with additional sheet inside. Six sides.  All pages are here and useable, readable (see condition report below)

Advertising on back cover is for song "Monte Carlo" another Paramount picture. No other adverts.

Music is for the piano, voice, and with guitar chords.

Condition:  ok for its age with some damage but it is all here.  Split to spine, wear to spine, wear and tearing to edges of pages.  Why oh why did they put the beautiful Marlene right where everyone's thumbs flipped thru the music.  Tearing and folding (see photo) of Marlene, but no chunks missing.  Can be archival taped and framed with only a bit of damage showing.  Pages yellowed of course.  Corners bend slightly and worn.  Tears to inner pages that correspond to where cover is torn.  Smudging on front and back cover but no stains.

Beautiful photo, graphics and coloring on this pretty pretty sheet music.  Not in the best of shape but what the heck, it will be very pretty framed and matted.
