ICE ROAD to ATHABASCA
Ian Heaps, World Champion fisherman, the late Fred J. Taylor, countryman and writer, together with their guide, Stu.McKie, following a dream to drive 280 kilometres along an ice road to fish through the ice for Great Northern Pike in Lake Athabasca. During this epic trip they travel by four-wheel drive vehicle, skidoo and sledge, living in a Chippewa community, learning cooking and fishing by traditional methods as well as exploring new techniques, fishing through a metre of ice using modern lures. Along the way we meet some ‘locals’ - including a cook, a herd of buffalo and a woman who skis - pulled by huskies. This is not just a film about fishing - it is an also an informative look at native Canadian Indian life in Winter and a way of life still far removed from ours.
