Found some wonderful books this week at an estate sale. Excellent books. All in beautiful condition unless noted.
Excellent soft covered book from 2000, with 165 pages, by author Elaine Reetz, a Wisconsin free lance writer. and much more. This is volume III of the series.
My grandfather immigrated from North Wales UK in 1908, but was not the first of the family to come here. Several of his uncles immigrated to work in the north woods in lumber and to farm. They made their "fortunes" and went back to Wales! One uncle stayed, worked for the railroad and helped Welsh families settle in Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas. This book is not kidding about the hardship that immigrants faced. The weather was unbelievable, throwing everyone but the Norwegians for a loop. One Welsh immigrant newspaper I bought on line tells of families giving up and going back to Wales. The snows and cold, plus hot summers with mosquitoes were too much for them! This book tells the stories of those early settlers, mostly German, and how they made a new home in the wilderness of Wisconsin.
Roughly covers the 1890s thru 1920s period with fantastic photographs. Includes old country stores, farm families, lumber workers, the coming of power to rural areas, German immigration, log cabins, sandhill cranes flying south, old schoolhouses, trains, grandma's wedding gown, telephone systems, haulin in winter, household hints from 1880, and lots more. I love the photos of the proud families standing in front of their homes. Bet those were taken for the folks back in Europe!
Condition: good for being 10 years old but not perfect. Cover has some wear, with damage to lower spine (scrape) and wear to the darker green cover (every mark shows). Scuffing of back and front covers. Folds to lower corner of cover, with some folding of pages underneath. Nice reading edition, but definitely not a gift book.
Excellent photographs and stories from Wisconsin pioneer days. Not in the best of condition but the beautiful photographs make up for it.
