Found some wonderful books this week at an estate sale. Excellent assortment of collectibles books. All in beautiful condition unless noted.
Excellent soft covered book from 1991 with 177 pages, it is packed photos and collecting information on many early appliances such as irons, toasters, waffle irons, little crock pots (from the old days), electric baking boxes, roasters, and lots more. Lots of what we think are modern inventions were invented back in the day. And back then they sure knew how to decorate them, beautiful china covered sandwich irons, etc.
Includes:
beginning of kitchen appliances 1900
coffee makers and coffee sets
combination applicances
broilers to corn poppers
irons
mixers and whippers
novelty appliances
toasters
waffle irons and sandwich grills
and lots more.
Cooking for bigger families was not as easy as putting poptarts in the microwave! Most homemakers had additional applicances in their kitchen to free up space on the stove and to use less energy cooking big meals. Electric roasters could cook the chickens, while the oven was being used to make the bread and cake/pie. I remember my grandma always used her roaster as a second oven when the house was full for the holidays. Her Nesco was filled with chicken and rice with onions, celery, and spices.
No built in appliances then, no microwaves, and no prepared mixes or freezers, so appliances took another approach to easing labor in the ktichen. They did multiple duties (small electric stoves w/ shelves), coffee perculators that warmed up biscuits, and waffle irons that kept scrambled eggs and bacon hot.
Condition: very good condition for its age. Slight smudging on cover, slight wear to lower edges and corners. Tight spine and pages. Slight bend to cover from use. No writing or damage.
Excellent book for those who are collecting kitchen appliances from 1900 to 1950, or just want to know what the heck something is that you see at a rummage sale.
