I am a shopping by heart and by nature.  Don't stick to the antique type things either, I hit all the stores in the area to just "nose" around.  Yesterday got a real find at a local store known for high end items bought in very small quantities.  Never quite know if they will have $75 knitting bag made of silk, a some English mugs, or a stature for the garden.  There in the craft section were a beautiful selection of knitting needles, crochet hooks and crochet/knitting accessories.!  Yikes, and mistake or no, they were sealed in bags of 6 and 8 and 10 packages.  !  So I did a little shopping.

Boye (now Wright's) brought out Balene knitting needles  maybe 20 years ago and they were an instant hit.  Supposed to look like ivory or whale bone (an icky thought today), the material used is silky to the touch, smooth, slightly flexible, and the points on the knitting needles and heads of the crochet hooks are beautifully designed.  After using them I hate to go back to my other needles.  Knitting needles have a curvy little point, these crochet hooks have a marvelous smooth ridge to hold the yarn.  See photo.

Like all good things, Boye decided to phase out the Balene and we did not complain much as we bought all the needles on sale in the stores.  But they only last so long and I guess the company listened because Balene II is now in the stores (Jo-ann's in US carries limited selection).  Don't notice a lot of difference between the Balene I and Balene II, design is same and these are so comfortable to use.  I have a little soreness in my hands sometimes and the needles I use, especially the thinner double points are wonderful.  

So naturally my mother did not raise a fool, I snatched up the Balene crochet hooks but alas no knitting needles but lots of knitting accessories!!

Every knitter and crocheter have a preference.  I like plastic, especially Balene, and the plastic from the 1930s to 1950s when I find them.  Bamboo is ok, but I seems to break and splinter them, especially finer sizes of doublepoints.  Aluminum or steel are my least favorite except for the super fine steel I use for knitting jewelry with beads.  The familiar click click click that the aluminum makes is so-so to me and I find the points don't seem sharp enough.  Look at us, fussy, fussy, fussy.
