Auction Description

Barr & Stroud 1940 WW2 Naval Bridge Binoculars + Case

Prismatic binoculars with a metal body. Knobs on each side allow internal filters to be rotated into the eyepieces. The government broad arrow mark appears near each objective lens while the maker's name is inscribed on one of the tubes.

The CF41 model was developed as night binoculars for use by the Royal Navy, who adopted it in 1935 as AP1900A. The model was highly successful both in the Navy and in a civilian version. After WW1 The Ministry of Defence realised that they could not rely on the supply of Zeiss binoculars and commissioned Barr & Stroud, who were high quality military optics manufacturers, to make binoculars.

These binoculars were made during WW2 for and probably used in the Atlantic, they have a patent applied for 1940 indicating their manufacturing date which was probably within 6 months of the application. They are fully operational and are equal to any Zeiss optics I have seen, excellent for astronomy as they were designed as night binoculars. The original canvas strap to the binoculars is missing. The knurled nuts at each side of the eyepiece were for mounting on a frame or to chain the binoculars to the observation position on the bridge.

The eyepieces are focussed individually, the four filters rotate as required, giving clear, yellow, polarising and green as shown in the photos. Structurally the binoculars are sound and ready for everyday use, they are exceptional. The original leather case, which would have been stored away on board ship, is in very good condition with no damage or tears.

These photos in no way show the quality of the optics, only that the filters are in place
