1965 ARGOSY COMIC BOOK PRICE GUIDE #1 - Deluxe Edition!
Auction Description

This "Buy Now" Sale is for a copy of the Deluxe Edition.

(Note: Not #29 as pictured but another copy in NM condition)

I am the original publisher of this authorized and expanded reprint edition which was published in 1997. The reprint edition was only printed in two editions (regular and deluxe) and never went to further printings. See print run information below. This is a very hard to find item. A copy of the regular edition reprint was recently auctioned by another seller (closing date March 13, 2008) for $23.50.

My supply is limited. Unitl I run very low on copies, I will be offering both of these editions at my original prices. When I get very low I will then start auctioning them off. So act now while I still have enough to offer at the low price!

What is the Argosy Guide?

The Argosy Comic Book Price Guide is the first known comic book price guide that was not a dealer's price list. It predates the well known Overstreet guide by over 5 years!  The story of the guide is one which features all the comic book dreams that fans during the sixties loved!  Michael Cohen and Tom Horsky, both young teen-age comic fans at the time, were employed by The Argosy Book Store in downtown Hollywood, California to develop the guide!  A 38 page digest size saddle stitched booklet was the result.

Featuring such prices as Action #1 at $100.00, Detective #27 at $80.00 and Amazing Fantasy #15 at $5.00, the guide is a fairly accurate portrayal of the emerging back issue comic book market at that time. The guide had an original cover price of $5.00, which was quite a lot for a booklet (later reduced to $1.98).  Being so expensive, few copies were sold. It is estimated that fewer than 50 copies of the original edition have survived.

Quasar Comics and Collectibles is happy to offer The Argosy Price Guide First Historical Edition for sale.  This edition was printed in 1997 in a very limited quantity of 800 regular edition copies and 200 signed and numbered premium edition copies.  The Historical Edition featured the entire contents of the original 1965 edition; The Origin of the Comic Book Price Guide and The Argosy Adventure by the original authors of the guide, Michael Cohen and Tom Horsky; an introduction which places the The Argosy in its proper historical perspective by noted fandom historian Bill Schelly and a forward by Bruce Edwards. The historical edition also features the original advertisements from The Rocket's Blast and The Comicollector #42 and #43 as well as other historical information.  This expanded edition is a digest size, 52 page saddle stitched publication.

A limited number of this publication are available as follows:

Regular edition $5.00 (only 800 printed)
This listing

Signed and numbered edition of 200 on premium paper $10.00 (signed by original authors Michael Cohen and Tom Horsky)
See our other eBay listing for the deluxe edition.

Grading and guarantee:
Non-CGC Comics and items:
Satisfaction Guaranteed -
If you believe a non-CGC item is not as described simply return it within seven days of your receipt, in the condition sent, for a prompt refund including both your return postage expenses and the initial shipping charge for the items in question. My aim is to provide satisfaction. I want to hear your comments. All books are packaged securely and have been scanned prior to shipment.

Grades indicated are based on Overstreet standards but tend to be, in the opinion of most of my collector customers and myself, somewhat more conservative (i.e., strict). I never grade books or other items mint since I don't believe there is a 100% perfect book or collectible. I know from experience that I grade much more strictly than most other dealers and I've had plenty of customer testimonials to this fact. Of the over 18,000 lots I've sold, in previous auctions, less than 1/3 of 1% have been returned!

For non-CGC items, all significant defects are spelled out so you can determine how much a given defect (or attribute) affects the book from your perspective. For example:  I'll always note subscription creases and the grade the book would be without it (as well as the "net" grade because many collectors don't like subscription creases at all and some (me included) would rather have a VF book with a sub cr than a book that is VG just from overall wear. Page color is usually noted and will always be noted if brown (except for reading copy or very low grade lots). Brittleness is always noted. Due to my extensive descriptions I have had many customers state that the books they received were much better than what they had visualized.

CGC Comics:
Comics graded by CGC are not normally returnable.

Shipping and handling:

All shipments are packed securely, I do not ship in unreinforced envelopes or bubble wrap without cardboard. Combine winning lots to save on shipping - if you win more than one item we will let you know the shipping total.  I ship items via USPS only.

Shipping Time: I do my best to ship out no later than the Saturday after payment is received if paid by Google Check-out, PayPal, money order, or credit card - other payment methods may take longer to clear. I meet or beat this goal 98% of the time. I always e-mail and let you know the day your books are shipped and provide the delivery confirmation tracking number for your convenience.
