Synopsis
Here's a brief synopsis:

A Lay Preacher is run down on the by-pass. A Right Reverend falls beneath the London Express. An old fisherman drowns in the canal. Accident, suicide, or murder?

Inspector Walter Darriteau of Chester police doesn’t believe in coincidences. He is interested, and his doubts are confirmed when another body is discovered.

Maggie O’Brien, propped up on a bench in Delamere forest, dew dripping from her nose, a cobweb stretched from her hat to the arm of the bench, death by carbon monoxide poisoning, yet there is no car to be seen in the damp, gravelly car park.

There is a killer at large. A random killer. A serial killer. A ruthless killer who will seemingly stop at nothing. But why? What is the purpose behind these seemingly unrelated deaths? It’s a race against time. He or she must be stopped before they can kill again.

The Murder Diaries – Seven Times Over, is set in and around the City of Chester.

Walter Darriteau is an adopted Cestrian, he’s nearing retirement, and now his colleague Sergeant Karen Greenwood covets his job, but Walter is not yet ready to end things on a sour note for he knows that this case will define his career. He determines to trap the killer, putting his own life at risk in the process.

Someone has to.

And here are some reviews I have been lucky to receive:
A clever, thrilling page turner of a book

Review By
Mrs. M. M. Smith "Margaret Henderson Smith" Author of “A Question of Answers” – “Ne Obliviscaris” and “San Marco – The End of the Road”

The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over

David Carter has written an intriguing story, made all the more absorbing by his attention to the detailed characterisation of all those involved. This gives the story immediate credibility and draws the reader to keep the pages turning in an attempt to discover what could possibly be the motive to the bizarre and inconsistent activity of the suspect.

Yes, there is a suspect but don't expect an early, obvious conclusion to this one. These apparently unconnected and motiveless murders reflect the complex background of the central character which has been woven skilfully into the story, adding to the intrigue and towards the end turning the story into a compelling 'cat and mouse' game which makes the book hard to put down.

If you are looking for something different, something to test your powers of reasoning whilst being brilliantly entertained, this is the one for you.

This book is clever and very well written. A good read I can recommend.

A first-rate piece of writing

The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over
The north-western England town of Chester (near the Welsh border) is being menaced by a serial killer. Inspector Walter Darriteau is on the case.

If there is such a thing as a "quiet" serial killer, that is the situation in
Chester. There are no cases of multiple stab wounds, or blood all over the walls. A woman is drugged, and her head is completely wrapped in brown tape until she suffocates. Her body is stuffed in a suitcase, and dumped in an abandoned quarry. An old fisherman is pushed into a canal and drowns.

An elderly woman is drugged and taken to a quiet patch of forest. The car is left running, and the exhaust is pointed back into the car with the windows rolled up.

The police don't know if they are dealing with one or more killers, or their gender. There are the usual taunting letters, specifically intended for Darriteau. The killer/killers have a specific grudge against Darriteau, a native of Jamaica who is nearing retirement age, and wants him to suffer. A fellow member of the police department is attacked at the local race track. Is Darriteau next?

This is also the story of a boy named Armitage, more interested in singing, dancing and flower arranging than in the usual activities enjoyed by boys. Dad runs a failing car dealership, and Donna, his second wife, who handles the finances, has been embezzling thousands of pounds from the company. She also hates Armitage.

When he is 11 years old, they are killed in a car accident. Armitage assumes that he will live with Mrs. Greenaway, the owner of the local florist shop, but she says that she does not have the space, or the desire, for Armitage. He spends the rest of his childhood in an orphanage. After he is released, he drifts from job to job. At one job, he crosses paths with Desiree, and falls instantly in love. She feels the same way.

Desiree is a brilliant student, and beautiful, who has been recruited to work at one of those super-secret research installations. She begins to have real doubts about her work, which involves experiments on live people. She starts bringing home samples of her work, and keeps a copy of her files off-site. Paranoia starts to set in. Desiree comes to an untimely demise.

Published in
England, this is a kind of "quiet" novel, but a really good novel. The reader will stay interested until the end. Here is a first-rate piece of writing.

Amazon.com Review

Really takes you inside the head of a killer

The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over.

Being a fan of murder mysteries, I was drawn to this book by the title, The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over.

I loved the way the author really gets you inside the head of the killer, and of the Inspector that refuses to believe
that all of the recent deaths are just accidents or suicides.

Was it really just a case of being in the wrong spot at the wrong time when he is hit by the car in the middle of the
night and dies when his head makes contact with the pavement?

Was it a case of suicide when the man plunged in front of the speeding train, or was he pushed?

Was it a religious motive, as more than one high ranking men of the church are two of the victims?

The Murder Diaries keeps you guessing the entire time right along with the Inspector trying to end his career on a high note.

I highly recommend this book as it is well written, contains a great storyline, and flows the way any great book should.

WHAT A FABULOUS READ –
MOST EXCITING BOOK I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME.

The Murder Diaries - Seven Times Over

From the first moment that I picked up and started reading 'The Murder Diaries Seven Times Over' by David Carter, I was HOOKED. The jaunty writing style of the author and the intriguing progression of the storyline held me 'spellbound' - a real 'page turner' of a book.

The book opens with a callous and fatal 'hit and run', the first of many random murders - seemingly 'unconnected', but knowingly linked - feeding the imagination and immediately drawing me in, eager to know more, wanting to know more, and needing to know WHY - and the intriguing game was on - between the hunter and the hunted.

Throughout the cleverly woven fabric of the storyline, the characters 'emerged' and took form; making me KNOW them, making me LIKE or DISLIKE them, making me WANT TO KNOW what would happen to them, and best of all making me CARE about them.

Through the chilling perspective of the killer and the ruthless determination of the pursuer, in the form of Inspector Darriteau, David Carter manages to paint a memorable picture throughout this book; sometimes moving, sometimes shocking, and sometimes so funny that it had me laughing out loud - a whole gambit of emotions in this thoroughly entertaining and unpredictable book - and like all the best authors, leaving the REAL SHOCK to the end.

A very well written and highly recommended read - I couldn't put it down.
